On Vacationing with Your Friends

This past weekend we made the annual trip to St. Simons Island, GA for the Georgia/Florida game. Actually, let's be honest. The game is an excuse for us to go on this trip together. It's an excuse to worry about nothing and enjoy everything. It's an excuse to pretend we are in college and soak up the memories of that insanely perfect time in our lives. As someone else mentioned, it's also an excuse to be exactly who we are with our friends without the pressures of parenting, jobs, and life in general.

Seth and I always feel outside pressure not to go. It's not cheap the way we do it, and it shouldn't be. But still, it's really not cheap. It's always near or on Halloween which adds some frantic feelings to trying to get out of town. Plus, this time of year starts to be tough in terms of just getting away for three days without your children.

But I always come home from this weekend feeling like I couldn't have lived without it.

This may sound dramatic, but it's the God's honest truth. I leave St. Simons knowing that I am a part of something really important and essential to who I am.

My group of friends from college, and some from high school, have been doing this trip for years. One couple has always planned and organized the whole thing and we just write them a check. The house has been the same, the food has been catered, and the drinks are sometimes presented to you when you walk in the door.

I've gone on this trip before and after getting married.

I've gone on this trip both times I was pregnant.

I went on this trip just a few months after my dad passed away.

I've made new friends while spending much needed time with old friends while on this trip.

I've cried on this trip, and laughed harder and for longer than I ever knew was possible.

I've been young and dumb on this trip and I've been a concerned mom helping a girl named Summer find her friends.

Oh, and I've now seen Georgia beat Florida three years in a row.

This trip recharges me, and it reminds that sometimes being carefree is the very best way to combat the pitfalls of having to be an adult.  To just say that I am grateful for the friends and the good times involved is the most massive of understatements. This weekend is the ultimate thing that I do for myself.

  1. I love this post, Jana! And I'm SO glad you and Seth still do this for yourselves and that you have such a good time. No matter WHAT, don't EVER stop doing things just for you. If you do stop, you'll crash and burn hard and fast. I think I commented that this particular picture of you is the most carefree I've seen you in a long time. That makes me SO happy!!! You being you with no pressures is a WONDERFUL thing!! I love you to pieces!
