Holla Hump Day

Being that I skipped the most important Holla Hump Day, the day before Thanksgiving, I have decided this one will take it's place…sort of.

A good friend posted this article in a Facebook group I belong to. This is essentially what Holla Hump Day is for me. It's a great time to say thanks for the traditional important stuff and be all grateful, but it's also a time to say thanks for stuff I probably wouldn't normally say out loud. My favorites in the HuffPo article are numbers 7, 12, and 19.

In the spirit of nontraditional giving thanks, this week's shout outs go to…

…other kids birthday parties where my kids play so much they pass out immediately when we get home.

…iPads, iPhones, and all other electronic mediums that kids are exposed to today. In some circles these things are a big no no. In my world they fall into the category of those "things we didn't have as kids" that are clearly amazing to have now. Just sayin'.

…therapy in all forms (stolen idea from above mentioned Facebook group). Seriously, this blog, my friends, and the therapist I pay to see are what hold this little life of mine together sometimes.

…concealer. I feel like someone should stop lying to teenagers and let them know that things like stress, having babies, and generally being an adult can still cause acne. It doesn't necessarily go away the day you turn twenty kids.

…Amazon Prime. While it may actually be OVERLY convenient, it's one of those rare things that makes me feel lazy and productive all at the same time.

…secrets. This one may be the most nontraditional, awkward one of all. I love the secrets that Seth and I have. I love the secrets my girls whisper in my ear that make no sense at all. I love secret groups and secret bonds with great friends. Obviously I am a full disclosure kind of girl…but the random secretive parts of life are often the most entertaining. SIDE NOTE - I am not talking about secrets that hurt people. Only the silly, sweet ones that are all my own.

…old things. Seth and I are in the market for an old farm table. These things are often so hard to find and so much money. But I love antiques, and I love that Seth and I share that love even if we usually can't afford it! I also love the history that's in my house because of old things. Be it a blanket or my grandfather's side table…I love feeling like remnants of a different time are in my home.

…post it notes. I'm sure you've all seen the blog Message With A Bottle by the guy who puts hilarious post it notes all over his house. Brilliant he is. I have decided that now that Lila is starting to read I am going to just put notes to her everywhere after she goes to bed. More on that in the coming weeks.

Please do share your nontraditional hollas. We know you have some….

  1. I am begrudgingly thankful for my breastpump. Thankful that the technology exists, because it allowed me to have an anniversary weekend away with my husband and to express milk in such exotic places as two different airplanes, the rainforest, and the dressing room of a TJ Maxx in Old San Juan. Begrudgingly because, let's face it, it is not super comfortable, and I would rather be snuggling my soft, warm, chubby, smiley, fuzzy-headed little baby. I am also thankful for all of the people I encountered while pumping and transporting the resulting milk. Turns out, I did not need to worry.

Also, Jana, Amazon Prime is NOT lazy...it is just smart :)

    1. How could I forget the breast pump! I feel so far removed from it at this point and yet it would still top my list of the not so traditional things to be thankful for. Well done pumping everywhere!

  2. Secret groups, eh? Not sure I like the sounds of that. (You knew I would say something like that, right? tee hee).
I am thankful for coffee. Cliche? Yes. True? Oh hell to the yes. It tastes delicious. It wakes me up. It's like a ritual every morning and I love it.
I am also thankful for mascara, because without it, I would constantly look like a dead woman walking! :)

    1. You know you have secret groups too…don't pretend you don't! Coffee and mascara are by far the most important parts of the morning. I too feel that without them I look asleep, dead, or perpetually hungover.

  3. I am thankful for the windows in my bathroom because they make it light enough that I don't have to turn on the light to tinkle in the middle of the night. I am thankful for my wireless headphones so I can watch my trash tv without annoying commentary from my husband. I am thankful that my child stays in his bed until I tell him to get up. I'm thankful that he can make it from his bed into mine so I don't have to get up. I am thankful for my laundry room being right next to bedroom so I don't have to carry clothes very far. (Anyone picking up on a theme here? Lazy much?) Oh, and I like secrets too.

    1. Being lazy is totally underrated in my opinion. Conveniences are a beautiful thing…especially when there are so many little ones that add up! And, I knew you would appreciate secrets.

  5. Thankful for belly bands for that awkward in between stage. Without them, I would wear sweatpants even more than I do! I know some people are anti, but I am thankful for the elf on the shelf because it entertains my 3 yr old and encourages him to behave! I also am thankful for my 3 year old's enthusiasm for everything in life! It helps me get through the day.

    1. We totally have an elf and I got so caught up in our advent calendar that I just never brought him out. Lila hasn't asked about him yet either! Maybe I will on Monday...

  6. P.S. I use Amazon Prime like my life depends on it. I haven't bought a single gift in an actual store. Who wants to go shopping with two toddlers? Not I!

  7. I'm grateful that my husband eats ANYTHING, including leftovers. Also- GPS, seat heaters, our Nepresso maker, bathtubs, wine, bathtub and wine together, and of course Amazon Prime!
